Engine cover fin

When the car is cornering, air moving over the spine of the engine cover can create lift, reducing grip. This fin counteracts that effect, and directs air more efficiently to the upper element of the rear wing. It also houses a cooling vent.

Sidepods

The MP4-25’s sidepods drop away sharply towards the rear, providing maximum airflow to the rear wing. The car is slightly longer to accommodate a larger fuel tank.

Front brake duct

With no refuelling this year, the cars will start races with enough fuel to complete the full distance. This will make them around 100kg heavier at the start of the race than in previous years. Larger brake ducts on the MP4-25 will give better ventilation to the discs and pads, enabling them to cope with the extra stress.

Nose cone

The MP4-25’s high nose follows current design trends, but with an unusual feature: a splitter plate under the nose, with a small horizontal wing that also acts as a mount for the TV cameras.

Diffuser

The diffuser channels air from under the car, boosting aerodynamic grip. The MP4-25’s gearbox has been redesigned to create room for a faster flowing, more optimised diffuser layout.

Front wheel

All cars now run 20mm narrower front wheels to give a better handling balance.

Front Wing

The front wing acts in the opposite way to an aircraft wing, pushing the car down to generate more grip. The flaps at each end are adjustable to tune the handling. The vertical plates at the ends of the wing are designed to direct air away from the front wheels, which are significant obstacles to the airflow.
